The annual PDC Darts World Championships are well underway, and after only three rounds, cult heroes, Ally Pally legends, and ‘streets won’t forget’ players have already been born. From Japanese superstars taking over the worlds, to international debutants earning the love of the fans, the £3 million plus investment in PDC affiliate tours means darts will only be getting better, and more hidden treasures will be found.

This year, more nations have been represented than ever in the World Championships. From Kenya to New Zealand, and anywhere from Singapore to Japan, some of the most underrepresented nations in darts have turned the heads of fans this Christmas, and with the news of massive funding ahead of more global tours, these cult heroes will be seen more and more, and won’t just be a one time wonder.

Last year the big story was about Rashad Sweeting, a darts player from the Bahamas who qualified for the World Championships, but couldn't make it to the Ally Pally, that was until PaddyPower themselves funded his trip. Little did fans know, a guy nobody had ever heard of earned the love and support of thousands across the country, and despite a round one exit, he put on a show, and will be remembered by the fans. This year, Sweeting did not qualify, and the fans felt like they were robbed of another classic night of darts at the Ally Pally, but now with the future investments in the tournament, some of these guys will be back, and it only makes darts a better sport for all that enjoy it.

Whether their investments sees tournaments take place in mainstream cultures like Australia and New Zealand, or more tournaments in countries like Japan, nations which love the sport more than anything, the sport is definitely in need of more international recognition, and for darts, pouring money back into the sport is what keeps it going, and it isn’t always the big names like Luke Littler that keep the fans happy, but the unheard of legends who come out of nowhere.
