Was Quinn Ewers Too Hasty To Join The NFL?

With the 231st pick of the 2025 NFL, the Miami Dolphins added a young and somewhat promising QB to their setup, Quinn Ewers from the Texas Longhorns. Ewers had been regarded as of the top ranked quarterbacks in the college scene, and was often tipped to be a fourth of fifth round pick in the draft, but after being selected in the seventh round of the draft, the financial hit Ewers took by leaving Texas may have shown he was a bit too hasty to join the NFL.

As we know, the NFL contract and salary situation at the minute is bigger than it ever has been, and as time goes on, rookies will begin to earn more, and especially the higher draft picks. But after dropping all the way to the seventh round, Ewers has found himself on the lower end of the salary cap as it was announced his four year rookie deal will pay just over $4 million over the four years. It was also announced that the former Longhorn will only have just over $130,000 in guaranteed money, a financial situation Ewers did definitely not think he would be in.

The reason Ewers may have made one of the biggest mistakes of his life is due to the fact he was offered a staggering $8 million for the 2025/26 season to go and reportedly play for Notre Dame next year, two times more than his actual NIL valuation. Ewers, who was often seen as a poster boy for NCAA football last year was effectively already beaten to the job in Texas by young prodigy Arch Manning, but even if Ewers had transferred to another school, the financial incentives would have made his goal to head to the NFL that much more secure.

With NIL money being how it is in 2025, the deal presented to Ewers was probably an offer you just couldn't refuse, but Ewers’ determination to play in the NFL now, and his belief that he wouldn't fall to the seventh round may have cost him a life changing amount of money. Being only 22, and still a solid college prospect who could've used his final year of NCAA eligibility to not only improve his game, but make some big money, Ewers’ decision to declare to the draft may have been the worst decision of his life, and despite the chances of him earning game time this year are high with Miami, Ewers has just missed out on a big pay day, and the lights of the big stage of the NFL, may have been too bright for him.

If Ewers’ career does pan out, and he goes on to be a great quarterback, being so young he has the years under his belt to make some money, but not only was his decision to leave college early, and fall so far in the draft a bad one, it may have cost him financially, and the rush of getting to the NFL may not favour i'm in having a successful career.
