Desperate for a QB, Could The Saints Turn to Trey Lance as Potential Fix

Derek Carr’s retirement, and the drafting of Tyler Shough in this year's draft means the Saints head into the season with probably the worst quarterback room in the league, and with no obvious QB1 on the team, a risk free signing like Trey Lance could be exactly what New Orleans needs.

Heading into the season with newly drafted Tyler Shough, Spencer Rattler, and Hunter Dekkers as their quarterbacks, the Saints QB room looks bleak, and with an extreme lack of NFL ready presence in the locker room, and failure at picking up one of the hot free agent QBs like Aaron Rodgers of Russell Wilson, a mid season move for a guy like former third overall pick Trey Lance may be the stab in the dark the Saints need.

Lance who was a highly anticipated prospect out of North Dakota state was tipped to be the 49ers next best QB to lead the charge after Jimmy Garoppolo, but a lack of playing time, and a broke ankle injury shortly after winning the starting job, Lance’ highly anticipated career in San Francisco was cut short, eventually losing his place to Brock Purdy, and in 2023 was traded to the Dallas Cowboys, a place where he was given little to no chance to prove himself.

But after three years of being given no chance at all, and being neglected in both San Francisco and Dallas, the Chargers signed him on a one year contract, but with another season of misery and warming the bench imminent for Lance, he is the perfect risk free, and free player the Saints could take a chance on.

With raw ability, and still an abundance of talent to show, Lance’ lack of opportunities have led to this downfall, but a year in a team like the Saints could be the place to prove himself, and with a one year contract, waiting to be earned, New Orleans wouldn't need to give up a lot, and would be a risk free move to give a once promising talent a stage where he can finally perform.

Lance has gone down as one of the ‘busts’ of his draft year, especially after going at number three, but a setup in need of a player with a chip on their shoulder, and a free flowing, nothing to lose kind of attitude, Lance would have no complaints at the chance to finally prove himself five years later, and would be a no brainer for the Saints to test the waters on Lance.
