Three Things We Learned From From The Opening Day Of The Premier League

Konate’s Time at Anfield Is Almost Over

Liverpool’s thrilling 4-2 victory over Bournemouth in their opening game of the 2025/26 Premier League season told us a lot about what we need to know about Liverpool’s new look defense headed into the season, and one thing that is clear, is that Ibrahima Konate is way off the mark, and with all the chatter surrounding his contract situation, his exit is closer than we thought.

The French international’s performance last night was not up to his usual standard, and with the rumours of his exit to Real Madrid next season circulating, he looks almost done with the reds now, and with Liverpool still looking to be active in the transfer window, Konate’s place in Arne Slot’s defense isn't safe, and his performance last night showed that it might be time to move on for Liverpool.

Semenyo Is The Real Deal

Last season we thought we saw the best of Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, but following his 13 goal campaign last season throughout 42 appearances, he netted two absolutely sensational goals against Liverpool last night, and proved he can be the next big thing for Bournemouth. A night of courage and frustration for the Ghanaian after suffering racial abuse early in the game resulted in a terrific brace, almost earning the Cherries a point before two late Liverpool goals. However, the goals themselves showed how good Semenyo can be this season, and his double digit campaign last season will only be topped this year.

Last night he looked like a player who has rapidly improved over the last three months, and his skill and eye for goal looks like something which will be a massive help for Bournemouth this season, and he will have no worries about getting balls in the back of the net this season.

Isak Isn’t As Important As Liverpool May Think

Even as the season gets under way Liverpool are still in pursuit of Newcastle’ Alexander Isak, but worries over their striker depth isn't as big as they may think, especially after how Hugo Ekitike played in his debut. A goal and an assist at Anfield on his Premier League debut is all the Frenchman needed to do to win over fans, and pressure and worry over lack of game time is the last thing he needs in this whirlwind of a saga with Isak.

Liverpool have continued to mention their need for another attacker this summer due to the loss of some key players, but in terms of signing a number nine for almost £150 million, Ekitike showed last night that there is no reason to replace him, and Isak isn't as vital of a signing as fans may think.
