With the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, the New York Giants selected Penn State’s star edge rusher Abdul Carter as they beef up their defensive line even more. But with his expectations already high, asking for the number of arguably the greatest defensive player in NFL history may have been setting the bar too high.

Following Carter’s selection to the Giants, he took it upon himself to request that NFL legend Lawrence Taylor’s retired number 56 be unretired so that he can wear it in his rookie year. But with mixed feelings about his request, he may not have considered the massive consequences to his decision.

With Carter now being one of the most promising edge rushers in the league, and destined to be a force on the Giants defensive line, his request for Lawrence’ famous number 56 may not have rubbed off well on New York and NFL fans, and could be a sign of things to come. With the request being such a massive one, fans may believe he is aiming to live up to Lawrence's legacy, and he may have raised his expectations a little too much.

A number of NFL fans and former players have also had their say on the matter, and some believe it is disrespectful for Carter to ask for such a prized number, and believe he has some serious work to do to prove to fans that he is worthy.

When rookies come in and often think of themselves too highly, most still live up to their hype, but with Carter looking to take such a special number for Giants fans, they may be waiting for him to put up an insane year given all his recent talk.
