Have The Mavericks Had One Of The Worst Seasons Ever?

It's no surprise things haven't exactly gone well for the Mavericks in the last month or so, but with the news breaking that Kyrie Irving will be out for the season with a torn ACL, the Mavericks 2024/25 season could go down as one of the worst in history. Despite not having the worst record, the unavoidable mistakes and situations surrounding the Mavs this season definitely shows how bad of a season they have really had as a whole.

The Mavs currently sit in 10th in the western conference and are currently on a two game losing streak, but as the time went by since the Luka Doncic trade, things have only gotten worse for Dallas on and off the court. After trading Luka Doncic to the Lakers in arguably the biggest trade in NBA history in return for Anthony Davis, the Mavericks front office practically turned the fans on them within the space of 24 hours, arguing ‘defense wins championships’ as their excuse for the flabbergasting trade which sent their franchise player to a competitor.

But being turned on by the fans wasn't the only thing to happen to the Mavs that week. With Anthony Davis set for his highly anticipated debut for Dallas, he went on and scored 26 points with 16 rebounds and 7 assists until he left the game with a non-contact injury, a sight no Dallas fan wanted to see. Days later it was announced that Davis would be out indefinitely for the season, making the trade look even worse for the Mavericks front office, putting the cherry on top of the cake for one of the worst trades in history.

Along with Davis being out for the year, Luka Doncic went on to shine with the Lakers who currently are sitting on a hot six game win streak, but that's not where the fun started for Luka. In his first game against his former team, Doncic put up a triple double with 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 assist, topped off with a stare down at the Mavericks bench, leaving fans in even more despair than they already were.

The Mavericks season was already a failure as soon as they sent Luka to the Lakers, but it would soon get even worse. With Dereck Lively III, Anthony Davis, and Daniel Gafford all out indefinitely for the season, it was only a matter of time before another one of their stars went down, and that star ended up being Kyrie Irving. It was announced earlier that Kyrie had a sprained knee, but was then upgraded to an ACL tear, meaning yet again, the Mavericks would have a season ending injury on their hands for the fourth time in the season.

But what exactly tops the season off for the Mavericks historically bad year. They could still make the playoffs, and they can still win games, but not if there's no fans in the arena. Yesterday the Mavericks announced that their season ticket prices will increase by 8% to help cover ‘ongoing investments in the team, and fan engagement’, which was unsurprisingly not welcomed well by the fanbase. After trading Luka Doncic, arguably one of the greatest to play for Dallas, and a fan favourite across the majority of the fanbase, some fans are disgusted by the audacity to raise ticket prices after this awful year. Raising the prices of season tickets was the perfect way to end a rollercoaster of a year, and crown themselves as arguably the worst front office in the league, but with a decent portion of the season remaining, could we see anything worse happen to the Mavericks?
