Mike Tomlins Job In Doubt

Following yet another disappointing 28-14 loss against the Ravens in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin’s playoff losing streak continues, and questions over his credibility as Steelers coach are beginning to be asked.

Coming into the 2025 playoffs, Mike Tomlin and his Steelers were coming off of an astounding 18th consecutive winning season, and were looking to finally get their first playoff win since 2017 in which they beat the Kansas City Chiefs. The Steelers found themselves in a difficult situation heading into the playoffs after losing their final 4 games of the season, and finding themselves in a matchup against the fierce Baltimore Ravens. With Mike Tomlin managing to keep his team in the winning column for the 18th season in a row, his playoff record in the last couple of years really doesn't reflect the outstanding record, and could leave his job in jeopardy.

After being knocked out of the first round after matching up with the Ravens, Steelers fans are beginning to wonder when their regular season form will carry on into the playoffs, but after the 28-14 loss to their division rivals, it seems the Steelers fans will have to wait much longer to see themselves in the divisional round once again. During the game it was highlighted how unsuccessful the Steelers have been in the playoffs, and many have argued that head coach Mike Tomlin has hit the glass ceiling as to how far he can take the Steelers.

With an exceptional resume, and a long list of achievements to back up his credibility as an NFL coach, Mike Tomlin’s job isn't in any kind of danger as of yet, but after Saturday's loss, it's definitely something to consider for the Steelers. Tomlin, who won the Superbowl in 2009 as the youngest head coach to win the Lombardi, has shown over the years how successful and competitive he can be as an NFL head coach, but with his consistent string of first round exits in the playoffs, the Steelers could consider taking a different route. There’s no doubt firing a coach with 18 consecutive winning seasons on his back would raise eyebrows, but a fresh face in Pittsburgh could be exactly what they need to have more playoff success. With a number of teams seeking head coaches this offseason, it wouldn't do the Steelers any harm to consider the options. With young talent and older, wiser coaches on the market such as Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, the Steelers could look to invigorate and refresh the philosophy within the team, and try and restore some playoff glory that they haven't seen in years.
