Precise May Be Good, But Is She Guineas Favourite Good?

Of all of Aidan O’Brien’s exciting up and coming fillies, it is the newly crowned fillies mile winner who looks to be his next big 1000 Guineas hope. Among the massive group of solid two year olds he has, Precise is good, but as 7/2 ante-post favourite, is she that good?

After maintaining her unbeaten streak ever since her first start at Fairyhouse, Precise has gone on to accomplish some serious accolades against some serious competitors, but is the form really that solid? Finishing first in a group three at Goodwood was probably the first time we really saw what Precise could be, beating out Sir Mark Prescott’s Moon Target who was a very worthy challenger, however a very impressive turn of foot and challenge within the final furlong and a half gave us a good glimpse into what Precise could go onto be.

However things got a whole lot sweeter for the two year old after winning the group one Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh showing a very impressive performance against group two winners like stablemate Beautify, and group one winners like Karl Burke’s Venetian Sun. However, beating the likes of Beautify can easily be discounted after her disappointing showing at Newmarket in the Cheveley Park Stakes, and the Fillies Mile form itself isn't so attractive.

As the 5/4 favourite, she ran a very good race an won easy, however with the likes of Composing and Dance To The Music, two horses who are pretty weak on form, the fillies mile form won’t hold up well in the long run, and for me, does not deserve a 7/2 Guineas ante post.

Right now Precise sits ahead of stablemates Diamond Necklace and True Love in the betting, and is even ahead of Venetian Sun who is 12/1, which for me isn't warranted given she just didn't fancy it at the Curragh. Sure beating a lot of her ante post competitors like Beautify and Venetian Sun warrant being the market favourite, but for me, the form so far isn't worthy of such a short price, and those like Venetian Sun would give her a good run for her money in a stronger field, and she could’ve done with a stronger fillies mile field to prove it.
