As newly crowned winners of the Championship playoff final, earning their well deserved promotion back to the Premier League for the first time since 2017, Sunderland won't waste their time when it comes to summer signings, but one man is sticking out more than others.

With Championship promotion comes the burden of signing new Premier League ready players, and with departures and arrivals to the club imminent, some veteran presence could be exactly what Sunderland need to have a fighting chance next season.

Promising talents like 17 year old Chris Rigg, and Eliezer Mayenda are shining sparks in a rather weak Sunderland side as they look towards the Premier League, in desperate need of some experience and wisdom to guide them too their full potential. And as Sunderland look to add early, one man who could easily slip into their squad, is former Premier League winning captain, and hometown kid Jordan Henderson.

As Henderson’s career has taken a rather odd path never since his exit from Liverpool in order to head to the Saudi League before the 2023/24 season, Henderson made the move to Dutch giants Ajax for the 2024/25 season, but a storybook return to English football for Henderson could be on the horizon.

The Premier League champion spent a total of 12 years with the north east giants before joining Liverpool, and now after finding himself earn and England call up, he may seek to head back to English football to play at the highest level to maintain his England duties under Thomas Tuchel. And with his boyhood club Sunderland earning their place back at the highest level of English football, it could be the perfect move for him.

Although Henderson has some time left on his contract with Ajax, a disappointing season, and a heavy offload of players this season may mean Henderson could be on his way. And with a heavy paycheck coming Sunderland’s way, a couple million would be more than enough to bring in someone who has bucket loads of Premier League and international experience, and could be a player which massively helps them in their quest to survive Premier League relegation.
