What The Jameis Winston Signing Means For The Giants

After much deliberation over the New York Giants quarterback situation heading into next season, all the rumours and possibilities of trading up in the draft, or signing a QB like Aaron Rodgers are out the window as former Browns quarterback Jameis Winston wins the starting role in the Big Apple.

The Giants cut starting quarterback and former sixth overall pick Daniel Jones last season after yet another disappointing year, but with Tommy DeVito being the only quarterback left on the roster after the departures of Jones and Lock, the draft looked a whole lot more interesting for the Giants. But after hundreds of different outcomes for the Giants quarterbacking issues heading into the 2025/26 season, former first overall pick Jameis Winston will presumably take the starting job in New York, signing a two year $8 million deal.

Winston’s personality and vibrancy is perfect for a city like New York, and had he been repping the red, white, and blue at the start of next season, his veterinary qualities could be a quick fix to some very big problems. Winston is an interesting player, with amazing ability to find tricky passes and make big plays, he can definitely be the gamechanger New York needs to just get that bit better, but his miscalculations and consistent interceptions mean he could still be a bit of an issue. But besides a few negatives, Winston is still a professional and trustworthy player. His personality alone will already make Giants fans happier after stale personalities like Danie Jones ran the team for almost six years, but the only question that is on Giants fans minds is what does this mean for the draft.

The Giants currently hold the third overall pick in this year's draft, and most recently have been tipped to trade forward, and trade back in order to pick Cam Ward, or Shedeur Sanders. But with the acquisition of Winston, it is looking likely that Travis Hunter will be the man for New York. This year’s Heiseman winner will be disappointed to not be going number one overall, but with Miami quarterback Cam Ward being the consensus number one overall, it looks like Hunter could fall to three. In New York’s case, this is a massive win. Picking up a player like Travis Hunter who thrives at both ends of the field is a no-brainer for a team with a struggling secondary like New York, but in this draft class, is a very smart and big steal at the number three position.

It's more than likely that New York have doubted the weak qb class in this year's draft, and could be waiting until next year when a plethora of new blooming qb’s come through. But with the Winston signing, it shows despite probably exploring all possible options to pick up Cam Ward they are not completely convinced by their ability to become a franchise quarterback. Next year’s draft has some stud quarterbacks who are already showing signs of being better than the entire current class. With Arch Manning and Nico Iamaleava, the Giants could be banking on next year's draft in a smart move to pick up a better future QB, whilst also picking up a generational cornerback in this draft.
