Should Belichick Target Former Tennessee QB Iamaleava?

2026 NFL draft prospect quarterback Nico Iamaleava will be one of the NCAA’s top quarterbacks in next season's campaign, but with recent disputes over his NIL deal, and disagreement with Tennessee, the Long Beach native will leave Tennessee, and take his talents elsewhere.

With high demands of $4 million dollars as part of his NIL deal, Tennessee urged the former number one high school recruit to rethink his demands, but after deliberation, Vols head coach Josh Heupel told Iamaleava he is free to leave, opening the door for a potential opportunity for new North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick to pounce.

The buzz around Iamaleava’s fallout over his NIL deal has been met with extreme backlash about the current state of finances in the NCAA. As time progresses, the college football scene has slowly begun to merge into a professional league, monetisation and salary being a bigger factor than ever seen before. One example of the ever growing salaries in the NCAA being new Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck who secured himself a $4 million NIL deal in Miami. Differently to Iamaleava, Beck’s decision to halt his NFL journey to go and fill Cam Ward’s spot in Miami was a good reason for his extortionate salary, but as seen in the media across the last few days, it looks like the Vols number one has bargained for more than he is worth.

With the fallout reaching the NFL with star players like Micah Parsons highlighting how the spark of college football, and the personality and character building the league brings has faded ever since the inclusion of the NIL deals, it seems players continue to believe their own financial gain is superior to their loyalty to their team. But here is where Belichick comes in. The multi time Super Bowl winning coach has a knack for discipline, and with his new home in North Carolina, bringing an elite level prospect like Iamaleava to his newly found franchise could do him a massive favour going forward. With discipline issues, and attitude issues labelled as a ‘bigger than the team’ attitude, Iamaleava could experience first hand how a coach like Belichick could change his outlook completely. Had Belichick bring Nico to NC, not only would his team get significantly better, but would also be a great opportunity to shape yet another great quarterback for the future. Iamaleava has shown he has the ability and skill to be a great quarterback in the NCAA, but being under Belichick’s wing could be even better for him. Motivation and selflessness are two of the biggest aspects for a great future quarterback in the NFL, two things Belichick would 100% embed into Nico, and could be a punt Belichick may never regret.

Regardless of where Iamaleava ends up next season, his ego and selfishness across the last few days has really highlighted the damage the NIL deals have done to the culture of college football, and given the players and future players a much more monetary and financial outlook on the league, instead of seeing it as their path to greatness. With stars and analysts sharing their thoughts, it is clear Iamaleava has ruffled some feathers, and with the response not favouring his decisions to favour his own monetary gain over his loyalty to the team, it isn't a good look for his future, and something needs to change quickly.
