Why Terry McLaurin Isn’t Worth $30M — and Has No Leverage to Demand It

Amongst the vast amount of contract holdouts still going on in the NFL, the Commanders star wide receiver Terry McLaurin is the most recent player to table his demands, and has even skipped OTA’s and mandatory minicamp as his stalemate against Washington continues, and it isn't the first time. But with demands as high as $30 million AAV, here is why ‘Scary’ Terry McLaurin isn't worthy of such an extension.

McLaurin, who certainly has the credentials to demand a rise, bringing five straight 1,000 yard seasons, and a total of 13 touchdowns last season, has one big factor which is holding his negotiations back a lot, and is a deciding factor which is depleting his leverage over Washington a lot. Although he can be considered a top receiver in the league, and a vital part of the team in their success going forward, his age is a bigger factor than he may realise, and could be the sole reason he doesn't quite grasp that big $30 million target.

Although those such as Mike Evans were paid similar amounts at a similar age, McLaurin doesn't quite have the pull like Evans has in Tampa Bay, and could be seen as easily replaceable by Washington, and a replaceable asset which isn't worth even close to his $30 million demand. When it comes to massive wide receiver contracts, it is often those who are 25-27 who receive those big deal contracts in their prime, and with McLaurin’s services potentially set for a big decline this season with the arrival of Deebo Samuel, his demands may seem an insult to the Commanders, and the feud could being to boil over as the season goes by.

So with a three year $100 million total deal in mind, in the next month or so, the talks between him and Washington will get tense, and with no agreement even close, a trade could loom, and his demands are not likely to be met anywhere else. Don't forget that McLaurin will be getting paid $25.5 million this season alone, and with a massive Jayden Daniels contract down the pipeline, paying McLaurin this ridiculous amount could cause issues down the line, and moving on to avoid any more issues may be in Washington’s best interests. But being his age, his productivity likely to decline, and his consistency often throughout the season and the playoffs being a bit iffy, McLaurin could opt to sit out and make things even more sour between himself and the franchise, but there is no way they pay him $30 million plus, and there is no way he deserves it.
