When a player is bought for a record transfer fee, there is always humongous pressure and expectation ahead of their first game, and as the freshly crowned record British transfer Florian Wirtz is set for his first game on August 15th, it is vital fans don’t overload him with pressure.

Ever since his move from Bayer Leverkusen, Florian Wirtz has been carrying the weight of a £116 million transfer fee on his back, and as the anticipation continues to grow towards his first Premier League start for Liverpool, the pressure is also starting to build. Wirtz has been talked about as one of the best talents of this wave of youngsters, and the move may just elevate Liverpool to the next level instantly, but if his impact isn't instant, it is nothing to worry about.

One thing Liverpool fans can't do is overburden him, and expect him to be the best player right away. Sure he is their biggest transfer ever and there is high expectation, but adapting to the Premier League, especially after joining a team who just won the league isn't easy, and Wirtz may take some time to find his footing. Fans, including Liverpool fans themselves have previously been suspects of putting too much pressure on players, one example in particular being Darwin Nunez, and look how that turned out. No Wirtz wont end up like Nunez, but the building pressure over performances is something that can impact players on the pitch, but with Wirtz the story is different, and time may be of the essence.

The German midfielder is joining a team who stormed the Premier League last season, and a team who are destined to go for glory again, this means Wirtz could either stand out and be the player they need to defend their title, or he could be mixed up with the numerous other stars on the team, and just have a solid year rather than the exceptional year people are expecting. And although he has experience on the biggest stage with Germany and Bayer Leverkusen, joining a brand new team with a completely different system and in a completely different league, Wirtz may need some time to fully settle in, and it is vital Liverpool fans don’t write him off too early. Whether he lights it up off the rip, or whether he is a slow burner, Florian Wirtz is destined to be a star in the Premier League, but overburdening and putting too much pressure on his back is the last thing he needs, and his route to being the star boy in Merseyside will be all smooth sailing.
