Why Tet McMillan Was The Perfect Pick For The Panther

Day one of the 2025 NFL draft has officially come to an end, and with some big trades, and some very unsurprising picks in the first round, one selection which has caught a lot of attention is the Panthers selection of Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan with the 8th overall pick, but was it the right choice for Carolina?

The Panthers finally found their feet with a good stretch of games coming into the final stretch of the 2024/25 season, and with the 8th overall pick in this year's draft, big decisions were to be made for the Panthers front office. With their eyes on a couple of linebackers and other pass rushers, it was Georgia’s Jalon Walker who looked like the favorable choice for Carolina, but on draft night they decided to take the offensive route and fill a much needed gap by taking receiver in elite aerial threat Tetairoa McMillan.

Heading into the draft, McMillan was by far the best receiver in the draft, and was tipped to go anywhere within the top 15 in this year's draft, but eventually found himself being selected 8th overall, heading to a promising Carolina team. The Panthers have had a clear receiving problem over the last couple of years with veteran Adam Thielen being their only hope as a WR1, and rookie Xavier Legette not showing as much ability as hoped. The Cats also traded away Jonathan Mingo during last season in return for a couple of picks from Dallas, but this year it was vital for Carolina to pick up a big receiver to help Bryce Young improve even more.

Lots of eyebrows were raised last night when McMillan's name was called at the 8th pick as Carolina were extremely sold on Walker, but in hindsight, with the massive gap in the receiving room, and the constant receiving struggles in the last few years for Carolina, it is hard to see faults with McMillan’s selection.

His ability and ceiling as a whole is second to none, and despite Matthew Golden being a close second in terms of his production, McMillan has shown during his college tenure that he will easily slip into an NFL roster, and could be the final piece of a very tricky puzzle for Carolina.

With day two just hours away, and the Panthers holding a little more draft capital, it is likely they have moved their defensive and rushing desires to days two and three, and with the McMillan acquisition, they have made their offense leaps and bounds better as Bryce Young finally has some elite help on the offense, an aerial threat who will only continue to get better in all areas of his game. Definitely a great pickup for Carolina, and nothing to complain about for the Panthers faithful.
