Stable Deal Could Make Byram Even More Tradable for Sabres

Arguably one of the biggest offseason trade candidates Bowen Byram and the Buffalo Sabres came to an agreement for a two year, $12.5 million deal yesterday, locking him down as a Sabre for the next few years. But even with the stable security within the new contract, the $6.25 million AAV, along with his age, and skill level, Byram could become even more of a tradable asset for the Sabres, and is an extremely interesting situation going forward.

Byram who was traded to Buffalo back in March 2024 in return for forward Casey Mittelstadt became a solid top four defenseman for the Sabres, and looked like a player who could be a stable d-man for them going forward in their rebuild being only 24 years old. But, as arbitration loomed closer for the Sabres and Byram, it was finally agreed that they would tie him down to a two year extension, shutting down all offseason trade rumours, but going forward, the new contract is still a very appealing one for most in a playoff hunt.

The former Colorado Avalanche isn't a massive point scorer, but a solid defensive player who has lots to give given his young age he has the NHL experience with five seasons under his belt, and now, with less than a $7 million AAV, his trade value could be at a premium. Although his $6.25 is only over two years, it is likely that an improved, 26 year old Byram will seek a larger extension, holding out this year in order to explore the market with a higher salary cap in place, but for the next two years, for any team in need for a solid, lockdown top four defenseman, Byram’s name will definitely be on top of the trade list for Buffalo, and could see him moved as early as next March.

General manager Kevyn Adams has already emphasised his desire to listen to trade offers for the young d-man, but no offer so far has tempted him. But, with a new deal under his belt, Byram’s future doesn't look certain in Buffalo, and a temporary contract like this indicates nothing but a pending trade. I'm sure Buffalo won't jump at any opportunity to move him, but this new contract keeps teams alerted to his situation, and Bowen Byram’s name won't be leaving the trade block anytime soon.
