The buzz this year in the NHL is all around the Washington Capitals, and for all the right reasons. With Alex Ovechkin only eight goals away from being the NHL’s all time top goal scorer, and the Capitals in a neck and neck race with the Jets for the presidents trophy, the Capitals could be up for a season nobody could’ve expected.

It was pretty much another year of low expectations for Capitals fans, but with Ovechkin on the road to making history and becoming the league leading all time goal scorer, they at least had something to look forward to, but that was until they started to become one of the best teams in the league.

After a disappointing season last year getting swept in the first round of the playoffs, this year looked bleak for Washington, but with Ovechkin’s mission on everyone's mind, it was the perfect year for Washington’s stars to show up. With Dylan Strome, Aliaksei Protas, P.L Dubois all having breakout years, the Capitals built themselves an almost perfect team. With goalscoring, playmaking, physicality, and elite goaltending, the Capitals may have found themselves a formula to be a real championship team. With Ovechkin getting fed by everyone possible on the offense, and Logan Thompson being one of the best goaltenders in the league, it's a postseason to look forward to for Caps fans.

With 2018 being the last year the Capitals had true postseason success by winning the cup, this season looks like Ovechkin’s final chance to win his second cup. With his offense staying consistent, and goalscoring better than ever, his drive to break Gretzky’s record, and his ongoing drive for Stanley Cup success, it could be a storybook ending for Ovechkin in Washington. It's likely Ovi will return for next season, but with how things are going this year, nobody could expect how dominant the Caps are.

With proof of being able to beat the best in the game, and the ability to take down teams in all kinds of ways, the Capitals have a perfect team had everyone stay healthy, and definitely have one of the best chances to get to the finals, and give Alex Ovechkin and Capitals fans a season that not even Shakespeare could write. Breaking records, and winning trophies, the Washington Capitals may really be on course for a historical NHL campaign in 2024/25.
