After scoring the golden goal in overtime to beat the USA in the final of the four nations faceoff, Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid has made a pretty good case for himself as the best current sportsman in the world.

The 28 Oilers star has been on the top of his game for a while now, and only keeps getting better. McDavid who has been amongst the greatest players in the world across all sports may have found himself at the top of the list after yet another stunning performance for his home nation Canada in the four nations faceoff. McDavid who went into the tournament as the best player in the NHL put the cherry on top of the cake after scoring the winning goal in overtime against fierce rivals USA to win gold for Canada. But his international heroics are only the tip of the iceberg as to why he is the best sportsman in the world right now.

Across all sports like Basketball, football and baseball there are players filled with raw talent, and could be seen as the best collective sports player in the world, but nobody even comes close to Connor McDavid. On raw talent alone, McDavid has arguably been the best athlete in the world for some time now. The skill and talent needed to be at the top of the NHL is substantially harder than any other sport, being both physically and mentally challenging. McDavid who led his team to the Stanley Cup finals last  year, just missing out after a game 7 loss, McDavid showed his true worth by winning the Conn Smythe on the losing team. One of the only ever players to do it. In terms of dominance and value, it can be argued that  a number of sportsmen are better than others. For example some may think Saquon Barkley or Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are the best current players in the world, but unlike those two, McDavid covers all bases of dominance, talent, and leadership.

Not only does his never ending form and dominance show why he is currently the best sports player in the world, but his recent achievements show how valuable and talented he is. During last year's Stanley Cup playoffs, McDavid broke the ‘great one’ Wayne Gretzky’s record for most assists in a Stanley Cup playoffs, and became the only player in history to record back to back four point games in the playoffs. At the end of the 2023 season McDavid won almost everything possible, winning the Art Ross trophy, Ted Linsay award, Hart Memorial trophy, and the Maurice Richard trophy all in one year, truly showing the dominance he has on the league as a whole. And to top it off, he won the first ever NHL four nations faceoff, following in the footsteps of all time great Sidney Crosby, scoring the golden goal to win it all for Canada, becoming the MVP of the tournament, and being a vital part of the teams success in the tournament.

It's easy to say that anybody could be the greatest sports player in the world, but currently, his raw talent, dominance, value and reputation certainly gives McDavid the edge on others. Still being arguably the best player in arguably the toughest and most skilled sports league in the world, it's no question that Connor McDavid is currently the world's best sportsman.
