Would Blue Jackets 14th and 20th overall picks be enough to bring Jason Robertson to Columbus?

A year of ups and downs for Columbus is definitely something to build on and look forward to for Blue Jackets fans, and with two top 20 picks in the 2025 NHL draft, the Jackets could package the two as reports believe they are looking for established NHL talent.

Rumours have been flying that the Dallas Stars are prepared to drastically shake up their roster, and one name which could be available this summer is star winger Jason Robertson. With the Blue Jackets in the perfect situation to shop for valuable draft picks, could the Stars be tempted to take number 14 and 20 off the hands of Columbus in return for Jason Robertson?

Robertson who was underwhelming for the Stars this postseason hasn't exactly shown signs of elite level scoring this season like he did in the 2022/23 season, but after the bad dismantling by Edmonton, the former 100 point scorer could be a valuable asset who the Stars look to move this year.

With some of Dallas’ most important pieces heading to free agency this year, they could be looking to Robertson as the fall man in order to clear some much needed cap space, and with a cap hit of around $7 million AAV, he could be offloaded pretty easily. Also with players like Mikko Rantanen, Wyatt Johnston and Mikael Granlund taking his place in the top sic, a player with as high of a cap hit as him, it could be time to bite the bullet and invest in some youth.

And in Columbus, Robertson could be the perfect piece to finally complete a promising top six. With Kirill Marchenko, Kent Johnson, Adam Fantilli, and Sean Monahan all solidified as top six players on the roster, a player like Robertson slots in perfectly on the top line alongside Monahan and Marchenko, and in Columbus’ case, is as established as a player can get, and could rediscover his true form with the Blue Jackets.

Loaded up with two top 20 picks, Dallas would probably be tempted by the idea, but may ask for extra. In Columbus’ case, two first would be enough, but throwing in a top four d-man or even a bottom six forward could do the trick, and both parties would really have nothing to complain about. As Dallas looks to shake up the team, and clear some cap space, and Columbus look to add another established and dangerous weapon to their offense, it is a deal that works out perfectly. A no brainer for both, and in the long run could be a trade they both look back on as a perfectly sized up bit of business.
